TILII is recruiting!
Do you support an adult with a learning disability?
Do they like to have their say about things that affect their live?
Can they travel independently or get support to attend meetings?
If yes, then ARC’s Telling It Like It Is (TILII) groups may be for them.
ARC has facilitated TILII for over 12, with the TILII representatives having been instrumental supporting staff inductions and facilitating workshops, helping professionals understand what it is really like to live with a learning disability and how they hope to be treated.
Recently TILII fed in their views regarding Self-Directed Support and the cross-departmental Adult Safeguarding Policy. On too many occasions those of us that work in the sector feel able to contribute our thoughts and reflections on what should be in the best interests of a person with a learning disability – but what better way to learn this than by asking a person themselves?
The TILII model promotes group advocacy, enabling a person to develop self-confidence and work together supporting each other as peers. There are three meeting locations, Bangor Belfast and Downpatrick.
TILII have also carried out additional roles, such as creating easy read materials and this led ARC to consider what other roles TILII representatives might like to do.
In response ARC will soon begin a capacity building course, equipping TILII representatives to learn how to deliver training with a view of developing a portfolio of diverse training sessions, for professionals and other adults with a learning disability. They will also learn journalistic skills with a view of becoming a roving reporter, covering good new stories within the learning disability sector.
If this type of activity might be of interest please talk to the person you support, giving them the information leaflet and TILI Application Form to promote this opportunity.
