Self-Harm Awareness Workshop

ARC England self-harm and learning disability workshop

People with learning disabilities are thought to self-harm at roughly double the rate of the general population. It is being reported to ARC as a growing concern with members seeing rises in the number of people who self-harm, combined with staff lacking the confidence and skills to deal with the issue.

To support our members, and others, ARC has designed a one-day workshop on self-harm, drawing on the research project ‘Hidden Pain – Self-Harm and People with Learning Disabilities’ which was jointly conducted by Self injury Support (formerly Bristol Crisis Service for Women) and the Norah Fry Research Centre at the University of Bristol, and from interviews with people with learning disabilities who self-harm.

The workshop is aimed at all staff and managers working with people who, or may, self-harm, (much self-harm is hidden), and covers:

• What is self-harm?
• Types of self-harm/self injury
• Reasons for self-harm
• Responses to self-harm
• Communication with people who self-harm
• Identification and prevention
• Self-management
• Top tips

Some feedback from the workshop delegates:
