It was only 9 months ago when I first introduced myself to you as ARC’s incoming Learning and Development Manager. During those months I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of ARC members and friends, whether at one to one meetings, or at our events, and I’ve enjoyed every moment.
Now I have the honour of introducing myself again – this time as the ARC England Director. As Anthea mentioned in the last Real People it is a brand new post and one I am thoroughly excited about.
There is plenty on my to-do list and one of the key things is to continue to develop our Membership offer even further. ARC exists, “to improve the quality of life for people who have a learning disability by supporting anyone who is involved in the planning or delivery of support and services.” That is why we are here. So with that in mind we want to talk to you, support you, upskill you and your staff and ‘turn up the volume’ on those seldomly heard voices so the movers and shakers in our sector can be clear on the growing challenges you face. I’ll be hitting the road again soon and meeting as many people as I can so you can tell me how we can best support you.
Another key initiative is to create a pool of ARC Associates, experts (like you), who work in our sector. People who have the knowledge, skill and passion to share their knowledge with colleagues in the sector, by delivering some of our training on a casual basis. If that sounds like you please drop me a line…
One of my first duties came a couple of weeks ago as I co-chaired our Housing event in Sheffield. It was a great day, a diverse and interesting mix of speakers with thought provoking messages. These were intertwined with some fun quiz questions as the doorbell rang throughout the day! ‘Where did Paddington live?’, ‘What colour are the houses in Monopoly?’ and so on…
We now are looking forward to our next event, ‘Transitions: Is there anybody out there!… ensuring great transitions for young people with learning disabilities’ conference, in Bristol on 30th June. We have a stellar line up of speakers so get your place booked today. I hope to see you there…
