The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is the new Government framework for recognising achievement, through the award of credit, for units and qualifications.
It replaces the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), which included NVQs.
The framework assigns credit values to units and qualifications, allowing learners and centres to track progression and accumulation of learning, skills and achievement.
A new centralised database will help to track credit and provide learners with an online record of their achievements. Unique Learner Numbers (ULNs) are the unique identifier required to facilitate learner records and all learners are now required to have a ULN. The centre will help you through the process of applying for your ULN.
There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking these qualifications. However, it is the responsibility of the centre to ensure that candidates have the skills, potential and opportunity to gain the units successfully.
Candidates should not be entered for a qualification of the same type, content and level as that of a qualification they already hold. For example – If you have a NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care, you do not need to pursue a Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care, as it is an equivalent qualification.
There are three types of qualification available on the QCF, which are determined by size and rules of combination of units within.
- An Award contains 1 – 12 credits
- A Certificate contains 13 – 36 credits
- A Diploma contains 37 credits or more
Initial Assessment
One of the new requirements of the QCF qualifications is that potential candidates receive an initial assessment.
This is to identify:
- Any specific learning needs the learner has, and the support and guidance they may require when working towards their qualification. This is sometimes called “diagnostic testing”.
- Any units the learner has already completed, or credit they have accumulated which is relevant to the qualification they are about to begin.
- Any units or parts of units that may cause difficulties for the learner e.g. if their job role or level of experience is not sufficiently wide–ranging for them to meet the requirements.
Organisations may be eligible for funding support for some qualifications.
We have split the Qualifications that ATS offers into the following categories:
