Dementia Qualifications

Qualification Options

There are currently 4 Qualifications in Dementia Care available through City & Guilds.
• Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia (8 credits)
• Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care (min 18 credits)
• Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia (11 credits)
• Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care (min 21 credits)

The level 2 qualifications are aimed at learners who have minimal experience of dementia and/or dementia care

The level 3 is ideal if learners have a basic knowledge of dementia and/or dementia care and want to progress further and increase and demonstrate their knowledge and competency skills.


Dementia qualification options at Level 2

Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia
Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care.

You will need to complete just four mandatory units for the award, these are:
• Dementia awareness
• The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
• Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
• Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care

You will need to complete five mandatory units for the certificate, these are:
• Dementia awareness
• Understand and implement a person centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
• Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice
• Understand and enable interaction and communication with individuals with dementia
• Approaches to enable rights and choices for individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks

Plus 4 credits (1-2 units) from a range of optional units

Dementia qualification options at Level 3

Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia
Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care

You will need to complete just four mandatory units for the award, these are:
• Understand the process and experience of Dementia
• Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach
• Understand the role of communication and interactions with individuals who have dementia
• Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion

You will need to complete four mandatory units for the certificate, these include:
• Understand the process and experience of Dementia
• Enable rights and choices of individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks
• Understand and enable interaction and communication with individuals who have dementia
• Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice

Plus 6 credits (1-2 units) from a range of optional units

• Level 3 Certificate in Dementia Care – £113.00

Additional costs for assessment, observations, internal quality assurance etc. may need to be added to the above costs dependent on organisations in-house support.

Registration Period

The above Dementia qualifications are open for registration until December 2017.

  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

How long will it take

When you register, you will be given a target date in which to achieve your qualification, you can complete your qualification sooner than the end date if you are able to submit work regularly and at a good pace. This will be discussed and agreed with your allocated assessor.

To register for any of these qualifications, you need to complete the necessary registration forms. This will prompt support for you to consider all the aspects involved in undertaking the qualification and ensure the right one is selected for you.
