Course information:

This is a distance/ open learning pack which is designed in an easy to follow format with information to read and exercises to help learners relate their learning back to the workplace and help consolidate the knowledge.

Learners work their way through the Promoting and Providing Active Support Distance Learning Pack, reading, doing exercises and gathering information from their workplace on ‘ways of working’ until the pack is complete.

Once the pack has been completed learners are then given the workbook, which is completed then sent for assessment by our appropriately qualified assessors. Once it is assessed they can use this as evidence if they wish to go on to complete the full unit which is is competence based, learners would need their competence assessed in the workplace. The assessed workbook can be used as evidence of their knowledge base.

Assessment

We have designed workbooks to go with these two units, so that learners can complete their training, answer the questions in the workbook, and have their workbook assessed by our appropriately qualified assessors (in line with QCF guidelines). This enables learners to complete the knowledge component of these units.

On successful completion of the training and workbooks learners can go on to complete the whole unit, by having their performance assessed in their work environment. This can be used towards a qualification such as the Health and Social Care Diploma or as part of a person’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Pack information:

The Positive Risk-Taking Distance Learning pack has been written in an easy to follow format, which includes information to read, exercises to complete, information to gather and think about or remember boxes. These are all designed to help you learn and relate your new knowledge to your workplace as well to help consolidate your knowledge.

When you have completed your Distance Learning pack, you will be able to go on to complete the workbook for one of the units LD 205 or LD 305.When you have completed your workbook you will send to ARC for assessment and Internal Quality Assurance and Certification.

The Common Induction Standards are the standards that Skills for Care have set for all new workers working in the Health and Social Care sector. Although the standards are not a requirement for the role of the PA at present, we feel that because they are important for all other roles within Health and Social Care they will undoubtedly have value for PAs.

We have made sure that the standards are adapted to the role of the PA, who is usually working one-to-one and often in their employer’s home.

This pack has been designed for the Employer and their PA to work through together.

Pack information:

The pack has been carefully designed so that the employer and employee work through the pack together. There are sections where the employer works alone and others where the PA completes exercises alone, often coming back together to discuss points. This gives both of them the chance to discuss the sections in detail and feel comfortable to raise any concerns or issues they may have.

This pack covers essential areas that working as a PA involves and is divided into the 8 areas of the CIS, these are:

The CQC have national standards on safe management of medicines and if providers consistently fail to meet these standards then they can be subject to large fines.

Darlington Care Home fined £4000
A care provider which failed persistently to comply with national standards on the safe management of medicines has been issued with a fine of £4,000 by the Care Quality Commission.

Gateshead care home fined £8000
A care provider which failed persistently to comply with national standards required for the safe management of medicines and care and welfare of people using services, has been issued with two fines of £4,000 by the Care Quality Commission.

In November 2012 the CQC published a report that “found 27 per cent of health and social care providers inspected in the past 12 months were failing to meet minimum standards designed to protect patients from unsafe and poor quality care.” One of the main issues included poor medication management. The Money Advice Service have an existing resource called ‘On Your Own 2 Feet’, which is a toolkit that was developed in partnership with ‘Fairbridge’ to use when working with young people to help them understand about financial capability.

ARC have used this resource as a base to develop a toolkit that can be used with individuals with a learning disability. The resource was piloted with groups of people with a learning disability then amended until a finished product was designed.

The toolkit is a combination of guidance, exercises and activities that can be carried out with individuals or groups of people with a learning disability. The idea is that you can use the resource and adapt it to meet the specific needs of the people who you are working with.

It is a resource for support workers and youth workers which has some great activities about understanding about money such as:

• Learning about how you feel about money
• Understanding about how much things cost
• Raising awareness of money issues
• Attitudes to money
• Where money comes from
• Learning more about finances in their locality
• Learning about essential and non essential spending
• Budgeting
• Where our money goes
• How much can I save?
• How much things really cost
• Running a place of their own
• How to reduce costs

All of the activities have been designed to be interactive and adapted to individual need.

Talking About Money This training pack helps you introduce understanding about money to the individuals who you work with. This covers why money is so important. How to choose a bank and how to open a bank account, banking terminology, budgeting and about financial abuse. This is a training package which includes; suggested timetables, training guidance, slides and handouts.

Moving on Planning Ahead We have developed this similar pack which is in the same format as Talking About Money but introduces people with a learning disability to the idea of moving on and planning ahead, covering; what living independently really means, do they want to live alone or share, rent or buy, what support is needed, how will they pay for it?

Guidance on Money Management There is also this free resource available which was written to help staff at all levels to understand the implications of the Mental Capacity Act when supporting someone to manage their money. This includes information about assessing capacity to make financial decisions, the roles of Appointees, Deputies and Attorneys, supporting people to create Lasting Power of Attorneys plus good practice in supporting individuals who lack capacity.

Our aim is to prevent the exploitation of people with learning disabilities, by those claiming to be their friends. We want to help people with a learning disability, and their families and supporters, to ask and to identify who really is a Friend and who is a Fake.

Launched at the Learning Disability Today conference in November 2011 was the ‘Friend or Fake’ Training Resource CD containing useful information, training sessions and video clips.
