Good news stories – Stable Home Family Trust

sfht-logo-with-strapAs part of Learning Disability Awareness week 2017, we have collected good news stories from our members. Here, Stable Home Family Trust, share feedback from some of the people they support.

The charity is actively providing supported living services for people with a learning disability to lead more independent lives. We have launched a £4.7 million Capital Appeal to fund this work and we are delighted that the charity has been able to purchase the first of the four homes it is raising funds for. The property will provide flatlets for 6 people and will be ready for occupation in July.

Meanwhile, some of our people have successfully moved into another supported living property that we have acquired by working with a housing association. Here are some of the comments from service users who are now living more independent lives:

Joanna & Michael

Matthew: “It is good to be more independent and I like the house. I am on the top floor. I love going shopping and I now go on the bus to Christchurch on my own. On Sundays I cook a roast dinner and invite everyone to share it. I am still going to Brockenhurst stables to visit the horses.”

Owen said: “I am loving it at Southern Road and enjoy shopping in Southbourne. Sometimes I get the bus to Salisbury to meet friends and have coffee. I Matthew - new cooking skillslike cooking for myself, especially eggs and bacon and love that Matt cooks us all a Sunday lunch.”

Our Aspire Personal Development Programme is really popular and provides opportunities for people with a learning disability to develop skills for greater independence – including Hospitality & Catering, Reception training, including computer and communication skills.

Katie: “I am really enjoying this course. I hope I can learn enough to get a job in the future and eventually I would like to be more independent and have my own home.”

Simon: “I enjoyed helping with the evacuation exercise and going round the building checking that everyone was outside and no one was left in any of the rooms.”
