Telling It Like It Is (TILII)
What is the project all about?
This project was designed to support a group of men and women with learning disabilities to run training sessions for staff. The project aim was also to offer training sessions to staff in services across the trust area and focus on the TILII Trainers sharing their views on what they want and need from staff who support them.
The project was also to encourage and train people with a learning disability to speak for themselves, at conferences, workshops and other important gatherings.
Developments from the project so far
There are two different programmes; TILII Bangor and TILII Muckamore, and this project has been receiving additional funding each year to carry on the good work that TILII is doing. The project is similar to the ARC England Calling the Shots project. A CD was developed that supports people with a learning disability to give training to new staff but the trainers have found they do not need it. Training for staff by people with a learning disability is now available.
Expected outcomes for the future
It is expected that funding for this project will continue and more people with a learning disability will become trainers and train their own staff in the best ways to provide support.
It is also hoped that the trainers will hold further training sessions including train the trainer and encourage other people with learning disabilities to train, speak up about their rights, take part in decision-making, influencing policy and attending conferences.
